World War I cut off Americans from the glassware available in Europe. Borosilicate glass was originally created by Corning Glass in Corning, NY for use on American railroads. Traditional train lanterns shattered from the heat of the flame in the cold winter air. Corning Glass quickly saw immense potential for this chemical & heat resistant product in both kitchenware & science. They coined “Pyrex” for kitchen use in 1915. It quickly became the leader in scientific glassware for its strength against chemicals, heat & mechanical stress. As the number of American scientists grew, the demand for Pyrex glassware increased greatly so much that European glassware never dominated the market again.
Very few products have ever been made so well that the brand becomes a generic name for everything similar. Pyrex is one of them. Corning Glass celebrates Pyrex as the trusted glassware of scientists for over 100 years.
