In America, glass bottles are known to have been used in pharmacies since the 1600s. Many colors were used to protect medicines from deteriorating in UV light; black, blue, dark green and purple. However, amber became the most common color in the Depression Era because is was cheap to produce. The New England Glass Company was the first to patent a formula to produce it.
