German immigrants John Bosch & Henry Lomb settled in Rochester, NY and started a company producing eye glasses and magnifiers in 1866. They manufactured their first compound light microscope in 1874. Bausch & Lomb became a leading producer of microscopes in the 20th century and became known as the 3rd largest in the world. Their company produced high quality microscopes and were leads in optical innovation for over 100 years before being bought out in the 1980s.
I have family roots in Western, NY who have found memories working for the Bausch & Lomb company. As a result, this piece holds a dear place in my heart.
